Ultimately, it doesn't matter to me at all what they're called - they're still available for play. Just seems odd that out of all of those, only Pit/Dark Pit and Marth/Lucina were rebadged as echo characters. I believe Pikachu/Pichu were the same way. Mario shared the exact moveset up until Mario got the FLUDD.
I.E., my memory of melee is fading, but I believe Mario/Dr. When they explained Echo characters, it sounded to me like most of the clone characters would be echos, which I took it to mean characters that may have different stats or slightly different moves, but otherwise use the same moveset.
If they were only doing it for exact clones (Which don't even really exist) then there would be no need for Echo characters at all - just do what they did with Bowser Jr. Fri 15th Jun I suppose, and if I had to guess, that would be Nintendo's reasoning too, but that seems a bit silly to me.
